What Happened to Ray

In 2021, Ray survived a car accident. He was alert and talking at the scene and initially showed no major injuries. He had no broken bones, no head trauma, and later scans showed no water in his lungs.

According to medical records and court testimony, once Ray was placed in the ambulance, EMS attempted a medical procedure called a thoracostomy - typically used when a lung has collapsed. Expert witnesses testified that Ray’s lungs had not collapsed and that this procedure was not necessary.

What happened next was catastrophic.

On the first attempt, the tube was inserted but produced pulsating blood instead of air. Doctors later confirmed this was because the needle struck Ray’s heart.

Incredibly, the medic tried five times, puncturing his heart again and again.

Ray survived, but he now faces blindness, limited mobility, and a long road of daily rehab.

We took Ray’s case to court. The judge found negligence but not “gross negligence,” so no compensation was awarded. Ray’s outcome doesn’t match what first responders expected at the scene, the medical record and sworn testimony point to what happened afterward as the turning point in his injury.

We’re appealing the decision and telling Ray’s story so the record is clear, the truth is understood, and so changes in oversight and training protect other families from what happened to him

Why we’re speaking up.
